On Sep. 19th, 2013, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) handed over a Clinostat research facility to the Laboratory of Environmental biology and life support technology at UN/China Workshop on Human Space Technology conference venue. Dr. Niu Aimin of UNOOSA and the chief of Space Applications Section of UNOOSA Dr Takao Doi introduced the principle of the Clinostat.
A clinostat is a simulator which utilizes rotation to negate the effects of microgravity on plant growth and development. The uniaxial clinostat can be used to study the biological effects of microgravity on plant seeds, seedlings and other small organisms.
Zero-Gravity Instrument Project (ZGIP) initiated by UNOOSA is aimed at contributing to the promotion of space education and research in microgravity all over the world, particularly for the enhancement of consciousness of microgravity science and education, and establishing a global network of research institutions participated in this project. UNOOSA globally solicited 20 scientific research institutions as the first group of participants. Professor Liu’s team successfully became one of the participants in the project by competition.
