Dr LIU Hong is Professor of School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of Beihang University, Full member of International Academy of Astronautics, General Designer & principal scientist of Lunar Palace 1. Since 2004, Professor Liu Hong has focused on the future space survival needs of human beings. She led the research team established the bioregenerative life support system (BLSS) after more than ten years of efforts. In 2013, she constructed Chinese first ground-based large-scale integrated experimental system of BLSS with a four-unit biological loop - the Lunar Palace 1. The longest and highest-closed experiment in the world—“Lunar Palace 365” was further completed in 2018. A picture of "Lunar Palace 365" experiment was elected as one of the best science images of 2017 by Nature. The research results will provide theoretical supports and basic techniques for the life support system during manned deep-space exploration missions such as the Moon/Mars base. In the past five years, Professor Liu Hong has published more than 50 papers in international journals in related disciplines as the correspondence author, and has been awarded the national patents on 32 inventions as the first inventor.
The laboratory of Environmental Biology and Life Support Technology belongs to the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Beihang University. Facing the great demand for China's development of long-term manned space exploration, the lab is carring out studies on advanced life support techniques and theories, which includes: theories and techniques for the key units and the integration of bioregenerative life support system, and microbial risk assessment and control technology for closed space cabins. Facing the main battlefield of the national economy, the lab is carring out studies on bio-energy and environmental biotechnologies and theories, which includes: Microbial fuel cell techniques and theories, Energy microalgae technology, theory and method of biological wastewater treatment enhanced by ultrasound, principle and technology of water purification with biological active carbon (BAC), and technology of man-made wetland system.
For the recent five years, she has published more than 90 papers in academic journals and symposiums in China and overseas, among which, more than 30 papers are cited by SCI. She has presided in compiling two sets of environmental standard, and has chiefly edited one textbook and one monograph. She is also the co-author of two monographs. She have obtained about 20 invention patents and patents for utility models, two of the patents gained the gold and silver awards on the 19th National Invention Exhibition of China.
At present, Prof. Hong Liu’s team consists of more than 20 people, including lecturer, post doc, and doctor and master students, whose specialized subject areas cover biotechnology, environmental engineering, ecology, mathematics and so on.
