In 1960s, at the beginning of manned space  flight, experts in the fields of life support technology and biology from  America and Soviet Russia have been exploring bioregenerative life support  system (BLSS). They clearly knew that manned spacecrafts would fly not only  around the earth but also to the lunar base, the Martian base and even more remote  deep space, so BLSS must be developed to accomplish these dreams.

BLSS  is an independent, integrated and complex system that can provide necessary daily  necessities for taikonauts, and in which food production, waste treatment and  atmosphere and water regeneration are achieved by the activities of biological  components like green plants, animals and microorganisms. Based on the  physicochemical system and bioregenerative life support system, with the  concepts of biological technology and ecological balance and man-made small  ecological environment build by combining engineering control technology and biological  technology, BLSS can accomplish to circulate and regenerate oxygen, water and  food between human beings and creatures in a closed system, to improve  regeneration of water, oxygen and food in long-term manned space flights, to  dramatically reduce the supply from the earth in long-term missions and further  to provide a comfortable and safe environment for taikonauts.
