Institute of Environmental Biology and Life Support Technology in School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of Beihang University mainly studies Bioregenerative Life Support System (BLSS) holding great significance in the development of deep space exploration, and investigations on the biological techniques and theories of water pollution control and environmental bioremediation to provide technical supports for the national economy. Three research groups are included in our Lab: Research Group of advanced life support technology : Compared different systematic conceptual configuration; established conceptual configuration of BLSS in the lunar base; established the mass exchange relations among different units according to the determinate conceptual configuration of the system and the astronauts' demands towards the recipe; brought forward and established the preliminary oxygen concentration regulating method with alga unit; studied the silkworm as the selected animal to provide animal protein in the system, and investigated their developmental characteristics, biochemical components and feeding techniques. More information Research Group of Bioenergy: carried on the researched on microbial fuel cells which can treat wastewater and at the same time can directly generate electrical power. We have analyzed the diversity of microbial community and isolated the electricity-producing bacterial from the anode chamber. Moreover, by optimizing the MFCs' architectures and selecting proper electric material, we have established several MFCs with various kinds of structures up to now. More information Research Group of low-carbon environmental biotechnology:especially on water pollution, resource utilization and environmental bioremediation. We have studied the theory of water purification with biological active carbon(BAC), established the technique of purifying water using BAC systematically and conduct application demonstrations, and meanwhile have taken the lead in using low intensity ultrasound to enhance biological wastewater treatment in China, and established the related technique preliminarily. Due to this technique applied, 30% improvement of microbial activity and 30% ～ 50% additional removal of COD, TP and TN in the effluent might be obtained. More information |
